Master of None

Anyone who has watched Aziz as a character actor in countless films and TV shows or seen his stand up specials, would have a preconceived idea of what Master of None would bring. It is probably a funny show that’s filled with the usual loud, wackiness found in most sitcoms.

Surprisingly, it is a very grounded show with a real world perspective of life…that is very funny! Relating to Dev, Aziz in the main role, is easy because he is a fully fleshed out human being rather than a stock character. Dev is an actor, and ends up in a high profile gig in season two, so there are some scenarios that only a few can relate to. But it is the everyman quality that Aziz brings out in Dev that allows us to connect with him and the issues that come up.

The supporting cast is superb as well. Although not as fleshed out, they too never feel like one note characters played just for laughs or cheap emotions. I especially love how Aziz cast his real life parents to play Dev’s on screen parents. It is quite obvious that his parents are amateurs, but it adds to the charm.

The show tackles everyday topics such as friendship, longing for companionship, religion, parental expectations, conflict of self, sexuality, career decisions and much more. All without feeling preachy or heavy. It is executed without regard for following a certain structure and most everything happening on screen feels organic. Most importantly, both seasons have a lot of heart without ever sacrificing its humor.
